If you’ve narrowed it down to these two, you’ve already done the hard part. They’re the two electric toothbrushes we got asked about most when we ran the store, and they’re close in price: $49.94 for the Oral-B Pro 1000 and $39.96 for the Philips Sonicare 4100 (list price $49.99) on Amazon when we checked on November 2, 2026.
The real differences are how they clean (a small spinning round head vs. a vibrating oval one), what they cost to keep running (replacement heads), and a few features that matter more than they sound.
A note on the name: Amazon lists the model we link, HX4031/71, as the Philips Sonicare 4100. Philips’ own product leaflet for HX4031/71 lists it in the Sonicare 3000 Series, with a 3100 handle. We link the HX4031/71 and use Amazon’s name for it in this article.
We sold thousands of toothbrushes and dental accessories, and Oral-B always sold much better than Sonicare for us. Between these two, the Pro 1000 sold more, and its buyers came back for replacement heads more often. Returns were very few for both, with no real pattern either way.
The short answer
- Get the Oral-B Pro 1000 if you like the feel of a small round head that cups each tooth, don’t mind a louder brush, and want somewhat cheaper genuine heads (in the 6-pack we priced).
- Get the Sonicare 4100 if you want a quieter brush, adjustable intensity (High/Medium/Low), and an “EasyStart” ramp-up if you’re new to electric brushes.

The cost nobody puts on the box: replacement heads
Both brands tell you to replace the head about every three months, so plan on four heads a year. Here’s what genuine heads cost on Amazon when we checked on November 2, 2026:
| Pack checked | Price | Per head | ~4 heads/year | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oral-B CrossAction (genuine, black) | 6-pack | $39.97 | $6.66 | ≈ $27 |
| Sonicare C2 Optimal Plaque Control (genuine, HX9023/65) | 3-pack | $30.79 | $10.26 | ≈ $41 |
At these pack sizes, that’s roughly a $14/year difference in Oral-B’s favor. Per-head cost depends on pack size: the same day, the Amazon-sold CrossAction 2-count was $24.97 ($12.49/head), more per head than Sonicare’s C2 3-pack.
Notes from the listings: – The CrossAction 6-pack listing says the heads are “compatible with Oral-B Pro, Smart, and Genius rechargeable toothbrush handles, and not compatible with Oral-B iO Series.” On Nov 2, 2026, it was shipped and sold by Amazon.com. – Sonicare C2 heads are “compatible with all Philips Sonicare click-on” handles, not Philips One or e-series. On Nov 2, 2026, the 3-pack was shipped and sold by Amazon.com. Check the seller before you buy, or buy direct from Philips.
Oral-B CrossAction heads (6-pack) on Amazon · Sonicare C2 heads (3-pack) on Amazon
What about generic heads? Our old store sold compatible (non-genuine) heads for both brands, so we’ve seen this question from both sides. Our approach with compatible heads was to read the reviews before we listed them; that’s how we’d know if there was a problem. For the details, see Original vs compatible brush heads.
How they feel to use
Oral-B Pro 1000: a small round head that oscillates and rotates around each tooth. Amazon’s AI-generated review summary (checked Nov 2, 2026) says customers find it effective, with mixed feedback on battery life, durability and the on/off button, and that some call it “kinda loud.” Those are customer reports, not our testing.
Hands-on: Ryan has used a Pro 1000 for about five years, and it’s still the same brush. It has held up well, battery included. We think the build quality is great and it’s a great value for the money.
Sonicare 4100: a larger oval head that vibrates rather than spins. The listing’s EasyStart feature gradually raises power over the first 14 brushes, which helps if the “tickle” of sonic brushes bothers you. Note that it charges by USB and doesn’t come with a wall plug.
Research pick: we haven’t used the Sonicare 4100 hands-on. What’s here comes from the Amazon listing and Philips’ own leaflet.
Who should pick which
Pick the Oral-B Pro 1000 if… – you want lower-cost genuine heads (the 6-pack worked out to $6.66/head when we checked on Nov 2, 2026), – you like a small head for tight or crowded teeth, – noise doesn’t bother you.
Pick the Sonicare 4100 if… – you want a quieter, gentler-feeling brush with adjustable intensity, – you’re switching from a manual brush and want the gradual EasyStart, – you travel and like USB charging (bring your own adapter).
From the store side, we didn’t see a pattern by customer type. Oral-B just always sold better.
What we didn’t test (yet)
We haven’t measured plaque removal. Nobody can do that meaningfully at home, so be wary of reviews that claim to. Both brands make plaque-removal claims; these are manufacturer claims compared with a manual toothbrush, not with each other. The Pro 1000 listing says it removes “up to 100% more plaque” along the gumline vs. a manual toothbrush; the Sonicare 4100 (HX4031/71) listing says its C2 head “removes up to 700% more plaque than a manual toothbrush.” For whether electric brushing is right for you, ask your dentist or hygienist.
What we did test: Ryan has used an Oral-B Pro 1000 for about five years. Everything else in this comparison is researched from manufacturer specs, Amazon listings, and our 18 years of store sales and customer experience. We didn’t run noise or battery tests. See how we test.
Bottom line
At about $40–$50 each when we checked, both are sensible buys, and both have a pressure sensor and a quadrant timer, which are the two features we’d insist on at this price. The tiebreaker is usually the feel of a small round head (Oral-B) vs. comfort and quieter sound (Sonicare’s selling point). On heads, Oral-B’s CrossAction 6-pack came out about $14/year cheaper than Sonicare’s C2 3-pack at Nov 2, 2026 prices; smaller Oral-B packs cost more per head.
